Metal railing installation across the UK

Inspired by structural honesty and minimalism, this project highlights the sculptural potential of metal in modern interiors. The steel staircase becomes an architectural statement, blending form and function with clean vertical lines and an elegant black finish. The design respects the original bones of the converted school building while adding a bold, contemporary feature.

The design respects the original bones of the converted school building while adding a bold, contemporary feature.

Crafted from curved steel stringers and laser-cut treads, the staircase was entirely fabricated in-house at our Park Royal workshop. The installation process was a feat of precision: the structure was lifted through a second-floor window using industrial winching systems. The result is a seamless integration of strength, craftsmanship, and aesthetic clarity.

Key Spaces

Living Space:

The staircase anchors the open-plan living area, rising from dark herringbone floors to a bright mezzanine. Its slimline balustrades echo the vertical rhythm of the windows, creating visual harmony without obstructing light or flow. The monochrome palette enhances the architectural drama while remaining understated.

Mezzanine Landing:

The upper landing, defined by the curve of the staircase and enclosed by custom steel railings, provides a visual continuation of the structure and acts as a quiet observational platform overlooking the lower floor. The black steel detail contrasts subtly with the soft tones of the interior, offering balance.

Workshop / Fabrication:

Before installation, every component was precisely measured, cut, and assembled in our metalwork facility. The process showcases Porfan’s ability to deliver fully custom, high-precision steel structures—even for challenging interior geometries.

Details

Color Palette:

The staircase features a matte black powder-coated finish, contrasting beautifully with oak treads and a light-filled white interior. This timeless palette adds depth without dominating the space.

Materials and Craftsmanship:

Fabricated from high-grade structural steel, the staircase includes curved stringers, laser-cut step plates, and custom-built railings. The precision of the welds and smooth curves reflect our workshop’s dedication to durability and aesthetic refinement.

Engineering & Installation:

Installation required structural coordination and logistical planning. The staircase was hoisted externally through a second-floor window using winches, then seamlessly anchored on-site. This process minimized disruption and preserved the architectural integrity of the building.
